Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Synopsis:
THE SILVER SICKLE is for fans of steampunk, cyberpunk, Veronica Roth, Scott Westerfield, and Allie Condie.

The end of humanity will come through the Silver Sickle . . .

Farissa lives every moment with reckless abandon, for it may be her last. Any day now, the alien goddesses will harvest her and take her to the mysterious Silver Sickle, never to return. She’s accepted that. What she can’t accept is this new idea of freedom Zel has planted in her head. She’d give almost anything to be with Zel, but how can she run from her destiny if it means putting the whole kingdom in danger?

Everyone in the desert kingdom believes the goddesses are immortal, but Zel has invented a way to kill them. Now all he has to do is convince Farissa to run away with him and plant a seed of hope in her heart that she’s not destined to die. Little does he know that one seed of hope could change the course of the future.

*** 4 Stars ***
Beautiful and wily Farissa has been one a leash all of her life as one the Consecrated. Her city’s king and kingdom worship the humanoid aliens that rule and live side by side humans. Deadly and having built the combined cultures of human worship with some tune of human freewill, the aliens keep the charade of living cohesively while planning the end of humanity. After a terrible fight and loss, Farissa is taken into the human King’s harem with the other virgin and beautiful Consecrated girls. There sole purpose is to please the king and one day be harvested by the aliens, dragged to the Silver Sickle where no one ever returns. Farissa’s love, Zel, is in the background, recreating a weapon that can kill the aliens. With help from the Cogmen (robotic, intellectual, and deadly strong) Zel hurries to recreate the weapon that was destroyed and try to free his love.

It comes down to a final blow in the temple and the alien’s true intentions are revealed. Origins of many are discovered. The horrid way humans are sacrificed for alien purpose is revealed. Will the Silver Sickle be the end of humanity, or can humanity and it’s variety of allies survive?
Super fun sci-fi/steam punk/romance/mystery/young adult… I think I could go on adding genres as this book touches on many. The characters were well developed and it was fun reading of a world similar to ours, but oh so different. Human deceit, lust, and jealously is very rampant. The Cogsmen are an amazing add in of engineered humanity that can play the political game to help those they care for. The aliens are just plain creepy, strong, and deceitful. I rooted for their downfall and for Zel and Farissa to finally be free to love each other.

Book Review and Giveaway (3 ebook copies): Arabelle's Shadows by Fleur Gaskin

buyBuy-book-from-Amazon-buttonAdd-to-Goodreads-button

review
Wow! This book was heart wrenching and addictive. Arabelle is an unusual beauty from New Zealand who is trying to make it in the modeling world. Without any luck in American, she heads to exotic lands such as Thailand, London, and Amsterdam. The novel is done in journal entries that vary between her teenage self, adult self, and present. The reader is lead on the rather sad and confusing journey as she tries to make a look for herself in an often floundering market. Arabelle has yet to have an actual boyfriend and really struggles to learn who she genuinely is. She experiments with different relationships with a few very different people, but ends up picking only those that seem to use and abuse her inherit innocence and persistence to please others. Throughout the whole book she battles severe, capital D depression, which is called The Shadows.

I think every young person, male or female, can understand the struggles Arabelle goes through and how she acts out in her desperation for just a little bit of understanding. The book ends with a peaceful note and the main character definitely gets rewards for all her struggles. I can’t help but wonder if this is autobiographical by the author because of the poignant insights this story pours out.

Be warned of many stomach churning moments and adult situations.

Review: The Space Between by Kristie Cook

This awesome books is FREEEEEEEEEEE right now!! Go get it while you can :)

Amazon

reviewOne of the things that I immediately loved about this book is that it kept me engaged from the very beginning. It was so mysterious and unlike any book that I've had the pleasure of reading. I've read books on soul mates but this was a whole different ball game. You're given a new pieces to the grand puzzle over the course of this book. I enjoy reading a book that leaves me grasping for straws. I couldn't guess what was going to happen and it intrigued me even more. I have to admit that the story telling of the past and present threw me off a bit. I'd get so wrapped up in one story line and get switched to the other. It was a little confusing to keep up with.

I liked that the romance was built up instead of thrown right at the reader. There needs to be that sexually charged energy or the smexy scenes will just fizzle and fade. It was scrumptious! I love that Jeric has that who bad boy thing going on but he's not a complete jerk. It's all about redemption to me. If a bad boy can't be redeemed in some way then they're dead to me. Jacey Cracks. Me. Up! I asked permission to share this snippet with you because I just about spewed my drink after reading it.

"I'd hung around enough guys since then, had been exposed to enough porno and seen enough sex in public to learn guys worshiped the cootchie." and a little further she continue to say "as soon as you give them access to the jewel between your legs, you've made their dreams come true. You've given them a slice of heaven. And not every guy deserves to have that, not my slice of heaven anyway."

Review: Forever by Mary A. Wasowski

Buy-book-from-Amazon-buttonreviewI've been sitting here stewing on what to rate or even how to write this review. Why don't I start by ripping the band-aid off quickly and go straight to what I didn't like. Okay, so you have this love story about a girl who moves to NYC to continue her education. She meets Walker Reed and they begin their whirlwind romance. Therein lies the problem. Their journey to love feels rushed. It kinda fast-forwarded a few weeks and they were already in a relationship, almost inseparable. I didn't *feel* the love quite yet. It was Walker's actions as the book went on that made me feel that bond between him and Reese. I want to share with you one of the moments that made me a believer. This is a small excerpt from the book and it had me in tears.
"When I look at you, this is what I see. I see you walking down the aisle in a beautiful, white dress designed by Freddy, and escorted by your grandfather. You’ll look so beautiful that I can hardly breathe. I see you holding our newborn son or daughter in your arms. I kiss your lips, and whisper thank you for making me the happiest man in the world. II see you and our children by my side when I cut the ribbon to the new building that I have designed. I see us growing old together, Reese. We will enjoy the family that we created. We will welcome our grandchildren into the world. Forever, baby…I only see forever when I look at you."

And there I go crying again. I was a goner from then on. I knew the plot twist was coming. I could feel it in my bones and I didn't want it to come. I wanted to stay in this land of bliss. Then it hit....and it sucked. Reese and Walker were betrayed by someone that's supposed to love you unconditionally. So what do you do when you've been dealt a bad hand? You move on. This cut deeper than I could have ever imagined. I began to accept it. He deserves to be happy right? I don't feel any hatred towards Walker. I sympathize with him.  Just when I came to terms with it and was happy for him my heart was blown to smithereens. I know it needed to happen but my heart is breaking for all of them. I've never read a book that brought in such strong emotions. Even now, the day after finishing the book, I'm still crying writing this. It's not fair! Thankfully book two is right around the corner. I don't think I can wait very long to read the second installment. Please do yourself a favor and read this book.

One wall divides life from darkness. After the worldwide Blackout, America built a concrete wall--the Frontier--across the middle of the nation to isolate its precious electricity in the top half. Everyone below the Frontier was forsaken, and now only a few survive in the grim region known as the Dark Zone.
Sixteen year old Phoenix Troublefield endures the dark with his girlfriend, Star Windsong. When America announces that it will trade electricity for immigrants, Phoenix and Star sacrifice themselves for the power that might save her younger brother. On the other side of the Frontier, they find America is not what they expected, and instead they are thrown into a shocking and deeply personal contest that threatens to destroy their love. When the chance comes to escape back into the Dark Zone, it may already be too late.

(Darkness Trilogy #1)

A typical teenager, seventeen-year-old Reed Hennessy doesn’t realize how lucky he is to lead a normal life until he loses everything, including his humanity. The attacker who slaughters his family and destroys their home turns out to be a vampire, a creature Reed had considered a myth.

Together, Reed and his companions face a harrowing, cross-country journey before stumbling into a plot which could mean the end of everything for humans and vampires alike.

review

**3.5 Stars**
Reed is an all star high school dude, loves his family, and an overall decent guy. One day, a vampire comes in, goes completely insane, and put all of this family in the grave. Unfortunately, Reed swallows just enough blood to be converted after wounding the vamp. Next day, Reed executes the murderous vampire with a quick bath in the sun. On the run, having no idea what he is or why, in steps old, gentlemanly Nathaniel. Bringing Reed into the fold of the crazy Queen of San Jose, Reed is sent out into the sun (one of his super vampy powers) to find Sarah, a psychic cop. What ensures afterward is some blowing up buildings, lots of running, vampire hunters, a crazy vampire king who is going to make zombie-human-vampires, and a sweet romance.
Easy to follow along and read. Simple plotlines that plow along in this fun, supernatural young adult novel. Totally different than what I thought, but enjoyable supernatural YA read.

DarknessReigns
BOOK TWO:
Darkness Reigns by L.M. Justus
(Darkness Trilogy #2)
Publication date: June 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Synopsis:
New York City is a wasteland. More than eight million people are dead or worse…infected.

After their failed attempt to stop the spread of a virus that turns people into zombie-like, human-vampire hybrids, Reed Hennessy and his ragtag crew are scrambling to stay alive. To make matters worse, the human authorities are close to proving the existence of vampires and blaming them for the disaster in New York.

Their storm of trouble is already spinning out of control when an old enemy reappears to issue a challenge–an ultimatum that will mean certain death for at least one member of Reed’s group. With their mountain of problems growing exponentially and a host of enemies closing in, they flee for their lives, desperate for a miracle. Will they survive and avoid the world’s scrutiny, or will darkness prevail?

review

**3.5 Stars**
The lovely-dovey couple of Reed and Sarah are now confirmed in an awkward romance of vampire and super psychic cop human. Nathaniel is ogling the local vampire hunter, Trudy. Sarah’s whiny sister, Sophie, continues to nag on and whine likes a pro. The group escapes the zombie flooded New York and hides in Canada. After a night out that takes a turn for the odd and dangerous, the crew head to the woods with the local vampire king. Faced with Sarah’s death, Reed has to be making a split decision of saving Sarah or ending her misery. The insane Queen of San Jose finally gets her come up ins, but with a huge plot twist that will throw a wrench in everything vampires believe.
Can they ever be human again? Love blossoms among the group in a few new relationships, even if they are mix matched. Constant on the run adventure made the novel entertaining and I look forward to seeing if the crew can revise the vampire curse.

UtopYA and Hot Models? A Dream Come True!

models
My pixie haired dream model looks just like Kendra! What a crazy coincidence!!
As if you need another reason to come to utopYA, there will be several models attending!! I was stoked last year when Frankie Rose brought her cover model, Collin Atkinson, to the convention. I remember asking Lori if he was shirtless and running downstairs to catch a glimpse. Lori even dino-posed him! Good times! Kelsey Keeton also brought a few of her own cover models along, Serena Capuzzo and Jaclyn Rutland.

[caption id="attachment_5249" align="aligncenter" width="192"]Yup....that's my cheesy face. Lori was talking about Dino-posing and we couldn't keep a straight face. Yup....that's my cheesy face. Lori was talking about Dino-posing and we couldn't keep a straight face.[/caption]

This year proves to be even more exciting with double the amount of models! :::please don't pass out, please don't pass out::: LOL I have a few favs that are going but they are all spectacularly gorgeous. Who wouldn't want to meet someone that adorns the books that we love?! It's a no brainer. These models are almost always the face that I see as the character and it's such an honor to meet them, and more importantly, the author that gave them a story.

I hope to see you all at UtopYA 2014!

Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to meet authors, models, bloggers and readers!

I'm bound to miss someone so PLEASE let me know if any other models are attending so I can add them to the list. I did a lot of stalking to do this post LOL. Also, I think this goes without saying but I do not own these images. Please do not crop/alter/edit these images without permission from the artist. Thanks!

I'm sure you want me to shut it already and show you the models...without any further adieu, I give you .....

"I attended UtopYA for the first time last year. Words can not accurately describe the atmosphere and experience you have there. It's amazing. It is also how I got into the world of book cover modeling. There were a few authors whom I met that suggested I should give it a shot. They introduced me to the incredible Kelsey Keeton of K Keeton Designs. I love her to death and have thoroughly enjoyed working with her. As an avid reader, the idea of being on the cover of a book is just a thrill for me. I can not wait to get back to UtopYA this year to see all those who I had the privilege to meet last year and to 'expand my clump' even further! " ~Amanda

"I began modeling after high school after being contacted by different photographers. I started working with Kelsey Keeton of K Keeton Designs, modeling for book covers, when one of her male cover models, Grant Mroz, saw some images of me that Red Vine Studios had posted and passed my information along. Kelsey invited me to a book cover shoot in November to observe her style and the general process and we have been worked together almost every weekend since. "

"Kelsey Keeton is bringing a group of her book cover models, as luck would have it, most of us are very great friends, so I am very much looking forward to the road trip from Missouri to Nashville! This will be my first ever Author Convention and I am so excited to have this opportunity. I hear there are nightly events such as Costume Karaoke and a dance, our group knows no strangers and is very outgoing so that's sure to be a blast! I very much look forward to meeting so many of the Authors in person who have chosen me to be on their books, representing the characters that everyone has come to know, love and connect with. I look forward to meeting so many new people and making new friends. We will have a table with awesome swag, business cards and are so excited to actively interact with everyone... "I am a full time student, wife, and mother of two crazy toddlers as well as a part time model and book blogger! I have loved books since before I could walk, according to all of my family, and I learned to read well before Kindergarten (my grandma owns a bookstore). I have always had a passion for books above all else so that is one reason I am so excited to be attending UtopYA this year! I always have a book on hand, whether hard copy or on my phone, and I always make time to read to my kiddos and read some for myself every night! I'm so excited to actually meet authors and be exposed to a more intimate environment between author and reader. I just recently had a dream come true of being on a book cover, which I never thought was possible in a million years! I had shoulder length hair and then I cut it all off into a Pixie Cut and thought for sure I wouldn't be on a cover until it grew out but it turned out that the author actually NEEDED a girl with a Pixie to portray her main female role in her book so I was ecstatic! The cover I got on was Skye Turner's 'Alluring Seduction'. Skye graciously let me read the first book in the series as well as supplying me with the copy I was on and it just got me even more excited about many other opportunities I could have with my favorite hobby! I have a book blog myself but I am still new to it all and I could definitely improve in some areas which I plan to do!" ~Kendra
